Υποψηφιότητες για τα Oscar 2003

Η ταινία "O Άρχοντας των Δαχτυλιδιών: Η επιστροφή του βασιλιά" έχει προταθεί για 11 βραβεία, κάτι που αναμενόταν μετά τη μεγάλη έκπληξη να αγνοηθούν τα πρώτα δύο μέρη της τριλογίας στις προηγούμενες τελετές πέρσι και πρόπερσι. Παρ'όλ'αυτά κανένας από τους κύριους πρωταγωνιστές δεν προτάθηκε για τα βραβεία καλύτερης ηθοποιΐας.

Ισχυρή είσοδο στα Όσκαρ έκανε η ταλαντούχα κόρη του Φράνσις Φορντ Κόπολα, Σοφία Κόπολα, η οποία με την ταινία "Χαμένοι στη μετάφραση" κατάφερε να κερδίσει αρκετές υποψηφιότητες. Κύριο χαρακτηριστικό των υποψηφιοτήτων οι πολλές και διάφορες ταινίες που προτάθηκαν με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο, σε μια εμφανή προσπάθεια της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας να προωθήσει στις αίθουσες κινηματογράφου ταινίες διαφορετικές από μερικές "διάσημες" που ήδη έχουν μεγάλη οικονομική επιτυχία.

Η τελετή απονομής θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 29 Φεβρουρίου στο γνωστό Kodak Theater με παρουσιαστή τον Μπίλι Κρύσταλ.
